About Rotary WHAT IS ROTARY?Rotary is an international service club organization active in 158 countries, with over 28,000 clubs and more than 1.2 million members. It was founded by Chicago lawyer, Paul Harris, in 1905. The term "Rotary" was coined from the fact that originally, the meetings "rotated" among the members' businesses. Today most clubs meet at hotels or restaurants over breakfast, lunch or dinner. THE ROTARY CLUB OF RENFREW Our Club is part of Rotary International District 7040. It is comprised of clubs in two provinces (Ontario & Quebec) and one state (New York). The district boundaries stretch from Sorel/Tracy in the East to Kingston and the Ottawa Valley in the West and south to Northern New York State. There are about 2,500 members in 63 clubs. A District Governor, chosen in rotation from each of these three areas, has the overall responsibility of overseeing the district's activities. The current Governor is Bill Hodges of Quebec. SERVICE AND FELLOWSHIP The number of projects supported through Rotary are too numerous to mention but the current vaccination program to eradicate polio everywhere in the world by 2002 is is a Rotary initiative carried out with the cooperation of the World Health Organization and many governments. 'PolioPlus' is well on its way to reaching its goal on time. LOCAL INITIATIVES MEMBERSHIP IN ROTARY MEETINGS Regular attendance at meetings is an important aspect of Rotary. Members who will be away from their local club on its meeting date are encouraged to 'make-up' the meeting by attending a meeting at any convenient club. FURTHER INFORMATION
